With two crews called in and Rescue Squad 14 (2004 Seagrave/Marion) on its first call since returning from a few week hiatus for body and other miscellaneous repairs, Rescue Squad 14R (1990 Pemfab/Ranger) was alerted for a motor vehicle accident with reported people trapped on Center Road in the area of the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. Engine Company 31 arrived and confirmed they had one trapped. Rescue Squad 14R arrived and removed two doors and a B-post to extricate the patient.
This was the 8th cut job of the month for the rescue squad.

| Rollover on Interstate 95 |

At 0859 hours, Rescue Squad 14 was alerted to southbound Interstate 95 at Powder Mill Road for the personal injury accident. First arriving units found an SUV that went off the road and settled on its roof in a drainage ditch with patients trapped. Rescue Squad 14 arrived and stabilized the vehicle. Next, all four doors and both B-posts were removed. The patients were transported to a local trauma center and Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 0936 hours.
This incident was one of five separate rollover incidents that Rescue Squad 14 responded to for the day.

At 1832 hours, Rescue Squad 14 was alerted to Kenilworth Avenue and East West Highway for a personal injury accident. Engine Company 7 arrived and reported they had one trapped in an SUV on its side. Rescue Squad 14 arrived and immediately started stabilizing the vehicle. After stabilizing the SUV with air shores and ratchet straps, the roof was removed to provide patient access. One patient was transported to a local trauma center and Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 1908 hours.

| Apartment Fire on Metzerott Road |

Just after midnight, Truck 14 and Chief 14 (Fusco) responded to 1810 Metzerott Road for smoke on the 4th floor of an apartment building. First arriving units reported they had a five-story, multi-family dwelling with nothing evident from side A. When they entered, they updated incoming units that they had heavy smoke on the 4th floor.
Truck 14 (2nd due truck) arrived and was assigned the “Vent Group Leader”. Truck 14’s interior team went around to side C, alerted Command they had a 6-story apartment building with nothing evident, and located a basement entrance on side B of the structure. At the same time, the exterior team threw multiple ground ladders, extended the 106’ aerial to the roof, and opened a stairwell roof hatch. After the interior team entered, they located fire in a stairwell on the basement level and extinguished the fire with a can.
After the entire building was checked, ventilation was coordinated to remove smoke from all floors of the building. Truck 14 was ready for service at 0054 hours.

| Heavy Entrapment in Chillum |

At 1646 hours, Rescue Squad 14 along with Engine Company 44 were dispatched to Sargeant Road and Chillum Road for a report of a crash with one overturned and trapped. Engine Company 44 arrived on the scene and advised they had a car on it’s side, wrapped around a telephone pole with one trapped. Rescue Squad 14 along with Chief 14A (McCoy) arrived and began to stabilize the car. The crew extricated the driver removing 2 doors and a post in 10 minutes. Rescue Squad 14 remained on the scene assisting Battalion Chief 4 with downed wires. Company 14 cleared at 1722 hours.

| 4 Trapped on the Capitol Beltway |

At 0822 hours, Rescue Squad 14, Ambulance 148, and Chief 14A (McCoy) were alerted to the innerloop of the Capitol Beltway at Baltimore Avenue for the personal injury accident with reports of people ejected and trapped. First arriving units found a three car accident with four people trapped in a minivan and seven patients total.
Rescue Squad 14 proceeded up the wrong way of the Beltway on the innerloop as ordered and started stabilizing the vehicle. Once stabilized, all doors were removed, the posts were cut, and the roof was removed. All patients were extricated from the vehicle and transported to local trauma centers. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 0916 hours.

| 2-Alarm High Rise Apartment Fire |

At 1937 hours, Rescue Squad 14 and Chief 14A (McCoy) responded on the Working Fire Dispatch to 8830 Piney Branch Road (Pineway Towers) in Silver Spring. Units were on scene with fire showing from the 12th floor of a residential high-rise.
With fire showing from the top floor, Rescue Squad 14 split their crew of 8 volunteers. Team 1 was ordered to assist in searching the fire floor, and Team 2 formed the Rapid Intervention Group on the 9th floor with an engine and truck company. Chief 14A arrived and was assigned the fire floor, “Division 12”.
While searching, Team 1 found several occupants on the 12th floor and brought them out to their balconies. Team 2 was put to work as well soon after arriving on the 9th floor. A May Day was sounded for an unaccounted firefighter with a last known location in apartment #1207, the fire apartment. Team 2 proceeded to the reported apartment and promptly cleared the May Day situation.
It took two alarms to bring the fire under control. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 2118 hours.

| First-Due House Fire in Berwyn Heights |

At 0107 hours, Truck 14, Chief 14 (Fusco), and Chief 14A (McCoy) responded to the 8800 block of 63rd Avenue, in the town of Berwyn Heights, for the house fire. Truck 14 arrived to find a one-story, single family dwelling with light smoke showing. The truck crew started their search and found a fire extending from an electrical device to adjacent furniture. Engine Company 11 stretched a handline and knocked down the fire, searches turned up negative, and Truck 14 assisted investigators and conducted overhaul. Chief 14A had the Command. Company 14 was ready for service at 0217 hours.

| Two Trapped on the Capitol Beltway |

At 0234 hours, Rescue Squad 14 was dispatched to the innerloop of I-495 at I-95 for the personal injury accident. Units arrived to find an SUV that went off the road, into the woods, with two trapped. Rescue Squad 14 with 8 volunteers arrived and immediately started stabilizing the vehicle. Next, all doors were removed to allow one patient to be extricated, but the driver’s legs were still pinned under the dash. The spreaders were used to lift from the center console, raising the dash off the driver. The driver was extricated, secured to a backboard, and packaged in a stokes basket for transportation out of the woods. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 0324 hours.

At 1752 hours, Rescue Squad 14, Chief 14A (McCoy), and Chief 14B (Kitchen) responded to Queens Chapel Road and Belcrest Road, across the street from Hyattsville VFD, for the personal injury accident. Units arrived to find a pedestrian with his arm trapped under the rear wheel of Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation “TheBus”. Rescue Squad 14 arrived and went to work. After ensuring the parking brake of “TheBus” and the wheels were chocked, air bags and wood cribbing were placed underneath the vehicle. The air bags were inflated, lifting the bus off the patient’s arm. The victim was extricated and transported to a local trauma center. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 1820 hours.
