| Rescue Squad Extricates One on I-95 |

At 0457 hours, Rescue Squad 14 was alerted to southbound I-95 at the Capitol Beltway for the accident with the report of one “flipped over”. Rescue Squad 14 arrived first on scene, advised the correct location was southbound I-95 at Powder Mill Road, reported they had one trapped, and established Command.
With heavy rain in the area, the vehicle was situated on its roof in a drainage ditch adjacent to the roadway. The squad crew immediately went to work stabilizing the vehicle with struts and cribbing. After the vehicle was stabilized, two doors and a B-post were removed to extricate the driver. The patient was loaded into an awaiting ambulance and transported to a local trauma center. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 0542 hours.

At 1810 hours, Rescue Squad 14 and Chief 14B (Kitchen) responded to University Boulevard and 24th Avenue for the report of a car into a building. Units arrived to find no cars into a building, but did have a vehicle accident with one trapped. Rescue Squad 14 arrived and started stabilizing the vehicle. After stabilization was completed, the squad crew removed the driver side doors and B-post to extricate the patient. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 1829 hours.

| Passenger Train Collides with Metro Bus |

At 1627 hours, Rescue Squad 14, Chief 14A (McCoy), and Chief 14B (Kitchen) responded for the report of a train accident at Queensbury Road and Rhode Island Avenue. Units arrived to find a collision involving an occupied MARC passenger train and two Metro buses, with approximately 400 total passengers. The rescue squad arrived to find no one trapped and assisted evaluating numerous patients. Six people ended up requiring transport to a local hospital and Rescue Squad 14 was ready at 1650 hours.

| Two Alarm Apartment Fire in Greenbelt |

At 1209 hours, Rescue Squad 14 and Chief 14A (McCoy) were alerted to 172 Westway, in Greenbelt, for the apartment fire. Units arrived to find smoke showing from a three-story apartment building and Chief 14A established the Command. Rescue Squad 14 was one of the first arriving units and was put to work as the Search Group. With the arrival of Battalion Chief 6, Chief 14A transitioned to Operations and the battalion chief assumed command. The squad crew quickly completed the primary search and found no victims. Next, they were reassigned to assist opening up as fire extended up the walls throughout the building.
Two alarms were required to bring the fire under control. The fire was contained to the original fire building with no extension to attached dwellings. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 1500 hours.

| Two Trapped on the BW Parkway |

At 0332 hours, Rescue Squad 14, Chief 14A (McCoy), and A/Chief 14B (Kiernan) responded to a report of an accident at northbound Baltimore Washington Parkway at Laurel Bowie Road. First arriving units reported they had two trapped in a vehicle in the median.
Rescue Squad 14 with 6 volunteers arrived and immediately went to work. A/Chief 14B was the first arriving chief officer and established command. The squad crew stabilized the vehicle, and removed all doors, B-posts and the roof to provide patient access. The patients were quickly extricated and transported to a local trauma center. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 0409 hours.

It is with deep regret and sorrow the members of the Berwyn Heights VFD announce the passing of Anthony F. Fusco, father of Fire Chief Chuck Fusco. Mr. Fusco passed away on March 7th, 2009 at the age of 84.

| Two Vehicle Collision with One Trapped |

At 2125 hours, Rescue Squad 14, Chief 14 (Fusco) and Chief 14A (McCoy) were alerted to Rhode Island Avenue and Sunnyside Avenue for the motor vehicle collision with one trapped. Company 14 arrived to find the same and the squad went to work. After stabilizing the car, the driver’s side doors and B-post were removed to provide patient access. The driver was loaded into an awaiting ambulance and transported to a local trauma center. Company 14 was ready for service at 2144 hours.

| Bus Collides With Utility Pole |

At 0821 hours, Rescue Squad 14 was dispatched to Kenilworth Avenue and Ivy Lane for the personal injury accident with reports of a bus versus a utility pole with one trapped. Rescue Squad 14 arrived, established Command, reported they had a bus into a utility pole with live wires down on top of the bus, and the driver was still in the vehicle. PepCo (electric company) was requested to expedite. Upon their arrival, power was secured, the driver was removed from the bus, and EMS transported the patient to a local trauma center. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 0903 hours.

| Heavy Fire from Beltsville Dwelling |

At 0037 hours, Truck 14 was alerted to the 4400 block of Josephine Lane, in Company 31’s (Beltsville) first-due, for the house fire. Engine and Truck 31 arrived to find heavy fire showing from a two-story, single-family dwelling, and requested the Fire Task Force.
Truck 14 (2nd due truck) arrived and immediately went to work. Making their way to the second floor of the vacant home, the truck crew conducted a search and ventilated as they went. With fire on the second floor, they opened up the walls and ceiling to check for extension. While the interior crew completed these tasks, the driver and tillerman threw multiple ground ladders and opened up the roof.
With aggressive engine and truck work, the fire was quickly knocked down, and Truck 14 was ready for service in less than 2 hours.

| Night Time Apartment Fire for Truck 14 |

At 2038 hours, Truck 14 was alerted as the first-due truck to the 9900 block of Good Luck Road for smoke coming from an apartment building. Truck 14 arrived to find smoke coming from a terrace level apartment. After forcing entry, fire was found in the bedroom of a vacant apartment. The truck crew completed the primary search of the terrace level with negative results and opened up to check for extension. Additionally, the driver and tillerman threw multiple ground ladders, laddered the roof with the 106' aerial, and checked the roof.
The fire was quickly placed under control with no extension to the upper floors, and Truck 14 was ready for service at 2201 hours.

| Midday Extrication for Rescue Squad 14 |

At 1104 hours, Rescue Squad 14 and Chief 14A (McCoy) were alerted to the innerloop of the Capitol Beltway at I-95 for the personal injury accident. Engine Company 41 arrived on scene to report one trapped in a car that went off the road.
Rescue Squad 14 arrived and immediately started extricating the driver. After stabilizing the car, the squad crew removed the driver’s door and roof to provide patient access. The driver was transported to a local trauma center and Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 1149 hours.

| 16 Runs and a Door Pop for Rescue Squad 14 |

Although the first run of the day did not come until after 8 AM, in the 16 hours following, Rescue Squad 14 ran 16 calls including a door pop. The cut job came on the squad’s 4th call of the day when they were alerted to I-95 at Powder Mill Road for the personal injury accident at 0849 hours. The squad arrived to find one trapped in their vehicle. After stabilizing the vehicle, the driver’s door was removed to provide patient access.
As the runs piled up for the squad, so did the need to get fuel. When the Rescue Squad went to fill up at 2215 hours, for the third time of the day, the fuel pump display read "Daily Fuel Quota Exceeded".

| Truck 14 Responds on Task Force to the 2nd Battalion |

At 2014 hours, the box alarm was sounded for fire coming from a townhouse in the 11200 block of Westport Drive, in Company 18’s (Glenn Dale) first-due. Engine 181 arrived on scene of a two-story with a basement, middle of the row townhouse with heavy fire throughout. An interior attack was initiated but crews were pulled out due to a partial structural collapse, and the Fire Task Force (additional 2 engines and 1 special service) was requested.
Truck 14 with 7 volunteers was alerted as the special service on the Fire Task Force, positioned on side Charlie, and laddered the roof with the 106’ aerial. The truck crew was assigned to the Bravo exposure and opened up the walls and ceilings, checking for fire extension.
With the truck companies opening up and the engine companies hitting hot spots, the fire was soon brought under control. Truck 14 was ready for service at 2128 hours.
