3 Extra Alarm Fires and 1 Cut Job
in 30 Hours for Rescue Squad 14

Starting in the evening of the 26th of February and concluding in the morning of the 28th of February, Rescue Squad 14 operated on (2) two-alarm fires, (1) fire task force and (1) extrication.

  • 2/26 @ 2015 – 5900blk Knollbrook Dr (44) – two-alarm apartment fire
  • 2/27 @ 0328 – 6900blk Riverdale Rd (13) – 1 pinned, took doors, roof and dash
  • 2/27 @ 1305 – 6900blk Woodstream Ln (48) – two-alarm townhouse fire
  • 2/28 @ 0349 – 9000blk 2nd St (48) – heavy fire from roof of house, fire task force

    Date: 2/28/09

    At 0349 hours, Box 48-06 was sounded for the 9000 block of 2nd Street, in Lanham, for the house on fire. Engine Company 48 arrived to find heavy fire showing from the roof of a house. Rescue Squad 14, who was on the air after clearing a medical local when dispatched, conducted the primary and secondary search with negative results, ventilated, and checked for extension. The fire was brought under control with the help of a fire task force, and Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 0557 hours.


    Heavy Fire from Lanham Townhouse
    Date: 2/27/09

    At 1305 hours, Rescue Squad 14 and Chief 14B (Kitchen) responded to the 6900 block of Woodstream Lane for the townhouse fire. Units arrived to find heavy fire showing from a end of the row townhouse, requested the fire task force (additional 2 engines and 1 special service), and upgraded it to a full second alarm shortly later.

    Rescue Squad 14 was among the first to arrive, was assigned the Search Group, and completed the primary and secondary search with negative results. Chief 14B arrived and was assigned Side Charlie. With fire extending through the roof, Command pulled crews out to regroup. Soon after, the squad crew was sent back in to open up for the engine companies to knock down the fire and check for extension.

    The bulk of the fire was knocked down within 15 minutes and Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 1454 hours.


    One Trapped on Riverdale Road
    Date: 2/27/09

    At 0328 hours, Rescue Squad 14 was alerted to the 6900 block of Riverdale Road for the motor vehicle accident with one trapped. Rescue Squad 14 arrived and found a car into a tree with one pinned. The squad crew stabilized the vehicle, removed all doors and the roof, and lifted the dash. The driver was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a local trauma center. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 0357 hours.


    Two Alarm Apartment Fire in Chillum
    Date: 2/26/09

    Just after being placed in service from a Montgomery County box alarm in Takoma Park, Rescue Squad 14 was alerted to the 5900 block of Knollbrook Drive for the report of flames coming from the roof of the building at 2015 hours. Paramedic Ambulance 44 was first to arrive, reported heavy fire showing from the top floor and cockloft, and requested the second alarm.

    Rescue Squad 14 with 7 volunteers was the third arriving unit, and was assigned the Search Group by Command. The squad crew split into two teams, quickly completing the primary search with negative results. With fire on the second floor and throughout the cockloft, Rescue Squad 14 remained on the top floor opening up and ventilating.

    By the first 15-minute mark, Command reported the bulk of the fire was knocked down. Rescue Squad 14 cleared the scene at 2119 hours.

     

    First Due Accident with Entrapment
    Date: 2/21/09

    At 1444 hours, Rescue Squad 14, Ambulance 148, and Chief 14A (McCoy) responded to the 6000 block of Greenbelt Rd for the motor vehicle accident with reports of one overturned. Company 14 arrived to find an overturned vehicle with one trapped. Chief 14A (McCoy) eastablished Command and Rescue Squad 14 started stabilizing the vehicle. Once stabilized, the roof and windshield were removed, and the spreaders were used to push the passenger seat off the unrestrained driver. Extrication was quickly completed and the patient was transported to a local trauma center. Company 14 was ready for service at 1516 hours.


    One Trapped in Riverdale
    Date: 2/20/09

    At 1826 hours, Rescue Squad 14 was alerted to Kenilworth Avenue at East West Highway for the motor vehicle accident with one trapped. Rescue Squad 14 arrived with a car off the road and one trapped. The squad crew stabilized the vehicle, and removed all doors and the driver's side B-post. With the dash trapping the driver's legs, relief cuts were made and the spreaders were used to lift the dash. The patient was removed from the vehicle by EMS and transported to a local trauma center. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 1844 hours.


    One Trapped on Southbound I-95
    Date: 2/2/09

    At 0254 hours, Rescue Squad 14 was alerted to northbound I-95 at Cherry Hill Road for the motor vehicle accident with reported on trapped. Units from Company 41 (Calverton) arrived at the correct location of southbound I-95 at Cherry Hill Road, and confirmed they had one trapped.

    Rescue Squad 14 with 6 volunteers arrived and found one trapped in a car that went off the slow shoulder and up a hill, leaving the driver trapped in the car. The squad crew used the hydraulic spreader to remove a door to provide patient access. Once access was gained, the driver was removed from the vehicle on a backboard, and secured into a stokes basket for transporting down the hill. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 0318 hours.
